Thinking About Coming to Learn to Sail With Us?
If you want to learn to sail in Grenada with us you will want to know as much as you can about the people you are trusting your money, time, safety and experience on. We are Mike Dye and Lesley Hayes, owners and managers of SeaHorse Sailing School. Let us tell you about ourselves below and why we thought the market had room for a sea training centre like ours
Originally from Hertfordshire, in the UK, Mike has been sailing for 35 years. He is RYA Yachtmaster Ocean qualified and a Cruising Instructor. He is a Commercially Endorsed skipper and holds an MCA STCW certificate. (Training in first aid, security awareness, fire prevention and fire fighting.) He has carried out a number of yacht deliveries, worked as a yacht broker and a commercial skipper as well as instructing.
In 2015 he sailed across the Atlantic, from Greece to the Caribbean, with Lesley. Mike then become an American Sailing Association Instructor and holds the following qualifications:
- ASA 201 Basic Keelboat Instructor Certification
- ASA 203 Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor Certification
- ASA 204 Bareboat Chartering Instructor Certification
- ASA 205 Coastal Navigation Instructor Certification
- ASA 206 Advanced Cruising Instructor Certification
- ASA 214 Catamaran Cruising Instructor Certification
Mike loves teaching people to learn to sail and knows all the great spots! He wants to be able to make learning fun and enjoyable. Mike is a happy chappy who loves music and sings a mean sea shanty! And he might even write you a poem or two during your time sailing with him.
Originally from Greater Manchester, UK, Lesley’s experience of the sea was limited to cross channel ferries until she reached the age of 29, when somehow she found herself in a 37′ sailing boat, heading across the Bay of Biscay.
She spent 4 years cruising the Med before landed a job at a Yacht Charter Company in Greece. It was then she gained her RYA Day Skipper qualifiation. She became involved in reservations, marketing, website maintenance, and sailing school administration until Mike suggested they bought a boat and sailed across the Atlantic.
Whilst Mike was working as an ASA instructor, Lesley found out that a yacht charter company in Grenada and St Vincent was looking for a reservation assistant. And she got the job!
So she has been working for Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada, and saw a gap in the sailing school market for a learn to sail school purely dedicated to teaching. When not working she loves to cook and swim, but not at the same time
Why Start a Sailing School?
Mike has broad experience working as an instructor with both RYA and ASA sailing schools and teaching people to learn to sail in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. So he has been in a good position to see what works well and what doesn’t work quite so well. He knew the key components were having a dedicated sailing school, with mature, experienced instructors and well maintained yachts.
Lesley, in discussion with owners of Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada and St Vincent, discovered a gap in their sailing school programme, and that was courses run on a cabin charter basis. We know they have great, well looked after yachts and we can benefit from their years of experience in the yacht charter industry. Further discussions resulted in us deciding that we wanted to help people to learn to sail in Grenada and the founding of SeaHorse Sailing School. So why not join us and learn to ride the waves?
